80/20 Rule in
Labubu
Labubu gets expensive when every Friday drop feels equally important. The 80/20 version is the monster you still clip on a bag. The other colorways can live in someone else's queue.
The hunt can stay fun. It does not have to become the hobby.
One family did a ridiculous amount of the year
Pop Mart's 2025 results were not subtle. The Monsters, the Labubu-led family, brought in 14.16 billion yuan. That was about 38% of 37.12 billion yuan in total revenue, up from about 23% the year before (CNBC on the 2025 results).
A small slice of the catalog did a huge share of the work. Your drawer can do that too, with less yuan and more dust.
Shopkeepers have said for years that about 20% of the products on the floor make about 80% of the sales. That is a retail habit, not a lab result. Labubu just made it cute and public.
The secret is a costume party
Marketplace listings cited in the 2026 earnings coverage showed a Big Into Energy secret figure listed at 99 yuan at retail and reaching a 4,522 yuan resale peak. A newer IP's secret topped out near 374 yuan (iChongqing recap).
Those are marketplace peaks, not a retirement plan. Same chase. Different crowd at the door. If you need the peak to justify the box, you already know how this ends.
The bag test
Before the next Friday, try one month with almost no system. Every buy or serious hunt gets one word: wore it, shelf, resale, panic, or fake.
At the end, look at series, not every box. Two series can stay. If a figure never left the house, it does not get a sibling.
Illustrative: someone logged four hunts and two impulse keychains. The joy sat on one plush that made it onto a weekend bag, and one older figure already on the desk. The hours went to a sold-out restock and a complete-the-set chat. Keep the bag. Close the chat.
8020 move: Name three hunts that never made it onto a bag. Skip the next one. Put that cash toward one official piece you would still want at retail in six months.
The stuff that fills the week and not the bag
Queueing every Friday as if absence were a personality flaw. Finishing a colorway you will not display. Watching fake-check videos longer than you wear the toy. Getting equally hyped for every new IP because the app pushed it.
Labubu did take a World Cup stage in Mexico City in June 2026. That was a real spike, and a real reason fakes and restocks multiplied (TechNode on the opening ceremony). A cameo is not a buying rule. If the ceremony merch fails the bag test, it was a souvenir. The same "few objects, most of the look" problem shows up in fashion trends.
Buy the one you would rebuy bored
Once you know which series you actually live with, the rest is small. Official store, official site, or a seller you can reverse if the QR and hologram fail. Count the teeth if that is your check. Then stop checking on the subway.
Write a monthly cap before the cart loads, not after. And if the published odds on a secret are 1 in 72 and you cannot lose the cost of a case, you are not collecting. You are buying a lottery ticket. Odds and caps live next door in blind boxes.
A celebrity bag photo is loud. A "last stock" banner is loud. A figure you already wear is quiet. If you already own a version you like at retail, you can sit this one out. Checkout habits are the cousin in online shopping.
Three lines the group chat keeps sending
"Every Labubu is an investment."
Most of them are toys. A few secrets printed a wild Dewu peak. Peaks move. If you need the peak, you failed the bored rebuy.
"A celebrity wore it, so the floor is set."
A photo makes a spike. It does not make a floor. Your log cares about a bag, not a paparazzi still.
"I have to finish the set."
The set is how the box gets you to buy the ones you will not wear. Joy is a bag and a shelf. Those are different scores.
Keep the one that leaves the house
You do not need a new personality, or a third IP, or a World Cup keychain that exists because a ceremony was loud. You need the monster you still clip on, and a cap written before Friday.
Run the month. If the joy stays on two series, you like Labubu. If it stays on the queue, you like the hunt.
